Samantha, a sea lion, plays with her friends Diver and Dodger Dolphin. One day the dolphins invite Samantha to go with them to meet some children (the two-legs) who live beside a salt water pond with their mother who is a veterinarian and runs a marine rescue center. Samantha is afraid if she goes there, they will capture her and put her in a cage. She learns that the children will not harm her. When she gets caught in a drift net, they come to her rescue along with their mother. Now Samantha, Dodger and Diver swim together in a pod with their friends, the two-legs.

We read the book this morning. My six-year-old twin boys loved it!Jamison (the man of few words) simply said, "I loved it, great story!"
Weston said "I really liked the sea lion because she was scared at first of the people, but then she’s not afraid because people help"
What a wonderful story! To be honest, I was not expecting such frankness on the harsh reality of zoo shows and the treatment of animals in a children’s book, but my boys were oblivious to it and were so into the story that they missed it, at least they didn't ask about it...but the seeds of awareness have been sown. The overall moral “that even though some people are ‘cagers’ there are others who love and help animals” is a powerful message of hope and compassion that I definitely wish to instill in them. The illustrations were really great too. Very detailed and colorful. It will for sure be part of the bedtime book rotation!

Samantha Meets Some TwoLegs Virginia Strong Newlin Pecki Sherman Witonsky 9780989560986 Books Reviews
Pecki's deep caring for the Earth and the animals that live on it shines through in all her stories and " Samantha Meets Some Two-Legs is no exception. The story is both educational and inspiring.
What a delightful book to introduce youngsters to the beautiful connection between human and animal!!! Highly recommended !!!!
In Pecki's new picture book, SAMANTHA MEETS SOME TWO-LEGS, written with Virginia Strong Newlin and illustrated by Gary Undercuffler (SeaGrove Press, 2017), a playful sea lion named Samantha, encouraged by her friends, Diver and Dodger Dolphin, meets Kate and Ben, a pair of two-legs who play with these sea mammals and feed them fish. Samantha worries that the two-legs will hold the sea creatures captive but she soon realizes they are friends. Samantha also meets their Mom, a veterinarian.
When Samantha gets entangled in a net which threatens to strangle her, Diver and Dodger summon Kate and Ben for help. They call for Mom, who takes care of Samantha’s wounds.
At the end of the book is an informative page about the Marine Mammal Protection Act, which protects all mammals found within American waters.
SAMANTHA is written in simple, accessible language, animated with active verbs and vivid descriptions. The colorful, joyful illustrations not only highlight the main action of the story but also include the local flora and fauna, such as a lizard, cormorant, sea otter, pelican, coral, and Pecki's signature monarch butterflies, which particularly tickled the fancy of my six-year old granddaughter when I read this book to her.
What is special about this book is its message, particularly appreciated by my 12-year old granddaughter given the reality of climate change, we are all responsible for protecting the environment and caring for our fellow creatures.
What is also unusual is the story's perspective. It is told through the eyes and feelings of Samantha, stimulating in readers empathy and understanding for creatures who can't tell us in words how they experience the world.
Appropriate for ages 5 and up.

Fantastic book!
What a beautiful book. A perfect blend of education and entertainment, teaching empathy and environmental awareness and the illustrations are gorgeous.
Such a lovely book. The illustrations were beautiful, and the story was a great balance of adventure, suspense, and education. The story will certainly capture a child's imagination and also make them more aware and empathetic to wildlife and our environment. Well done, and congratulations to the Authors and Illustrator for creating such a wonderful book to be read to many children.
Today I read the book from cover to cover to a young child that lives near me. The child loved the book and now wants to meet Samantha and swim with her. The drawings were bright and not scary and showed that one need not be afraid of something new to them. I anticipate sending my second copy off to my grand nieces as they begin the school year. Anxious to learn what they think of the book. Kids will also enjoy the book when I read to them at a nearby elementary school. It is a perfect companion for the author's other books.
